Girolamo Garimberto, a 16th-century writer and commentator on Italian art, composed his most well-known work while residing in Rome: ‘La prima parte delle vite, overo fatti memorabili d’alcuni papi, et di tutti i cardinali passati’ (The First Part of Lives, or Memorable Deeds of Some Popes, and of All Past Cardinals). This book, initially published in Venice in 1567, is a compilation of brief descriptions of the character and reign of numerous popes and cardinals of the Catholic Church.
