A vivid, small-format oil painting by Charles Robert Vallet (1907–1993), a French painter known for his luminous landscapes and bold palette. This compact work exemplifies Vallet’s post-1950s style, where influences of Cubism and abstraction intermingle with the natural forms of forests and hills.
The composition is structured with faceted planes in tones of green, ochre, and deep violet—likely inspired by the forests of southwestern France or the Arcachon Basin, a region frequently depicted in his oeuvre. The canvas is signed in the lower right.
Charles Robert Vallet was born on March 20, 1907 in Bordeaux, France, and trained under Fernand Ballet and Lépine at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. In 1952, a meeting with Pablo Picasso in Saint-Tropez significantly shifted his artistic approach, encouraging him to explore abstraction and Cubist forms.
He became a member of the Indépendants bordelais, alongside Belaubre, Boissonnet, and Lourtaud—artists credited with introducing the work of André Lhote to Bordeaux and blending figuration with modern abstraction.
Vallet is renowned for his color-rich, spontaneous landscapes, capturing the light and form of Bassin d’Arcachon, mountains, and forests. His works are held in both public and private collections and have been exhibited widely in France and abroad.
He passed away on June 15, 1993.
